From "we're fine" to "here's the plan": how to write status updates your leadership actually reads
Most status updates fail in one of two ways: they're a wall of technical detail that leaders skim past, or a vague summary that doesn't say anything useful. When leadership can't read the real state of the work, they can't help when things go wrong — and surprises erode trust fast.
In this 50-minute workshop, you'll leave with a repeatable framework for writing status updates that give senior leaders exactly what they need: clear signal, actionable blockers, and a credible path forward.
We'll cover three tools you can use immediately:
- The update template: RAG status, blockers, dependencies, timeline impact — and how to fill each field in a way that prompts action, not questions.
- The "Path to Green" framework: how to communicate risks as solvable problems, not alarms.
- Handling uncertainty: what to say when you don't have the answer yet — and how to set a credible timeline for when you will.
After a short walkthrough, you'll workshop a real status update from your own work in small groups, applying the framework and stress-testing it against what a senior leader would actually need to see.
You'll leave with a template you can adapt to any tool, and the judgment to use it well.
